Tips for Downsizing

Tips for Downsizing

Downsizing your home is never easy, but it’s a nice change of pace for many people! People reduce their lifestyle for all different reasons. From lowering expenses to traveling more, there’s never a wrong reason to downsize. Downsizing your lifestyle will lessen the physical and mental clutter you face every day. If you like the concept of downsizing but aren’t sure where to start, you’re not alone! Follow these tips for a successful and stress-free downsize.

Take it One Room at a Time

Instead of looking at your entire house that needs to be downsized, look at one room. Taking the process one room at a time is beneficial for several reasons, including:

  • Nothing gets overlooked

  • A more organized process

  • The task seems more manageable and less stressful

  • You won’t overdo it by going through too much stuff in one day

Create Four Piles

Many people recommend the three-box method when you’re downsizing, but the four-box (or pile) method is ever better! You’ll start by creating four categories. Keep, trash, donate or sell, and storage. The items you keep should add value or function to your daily routine. If an item hasn’t served you in the last year, you don’t need to keep it. Items that are in good condition can be donated or sold to limit unnecessary waste. The things stained, damaged, or otherwise unable to be passed onto someone else should be thrown away. Finally, the items you want to keep but don’t use often should be stored in storage. Seasonal decorations are a great example of this! A small storage unit is very affordable and helps to minimize the clutter in your home. When you need something from storage, get it and put it back when you’re done!

Rent a Dumpster

You’d be surprised just how quickly trash adds up during a downsizing project. Instead of hauling the garbage away yourself, consider renting a dumpster. Dumpster rentals are available in a variety of sizes. The dumpster will be delivered to your home and conveniently unloaded in your driveway for easy access. Carry the trash from your home to the dumpster, and that’s it! This keeps excess waste from sitting in your home and slows the process down. Contact the rental company when you’re done to have the dumpster removed. They handle the disposal of the trash, and you can keep working on your downsizing process!
