Garage Cleaning Tips

Garage Cleaning Tips

Winter is just around the corner, and once the snow starts falling, you’ll suddenly remember why you love your garage so much! Having a garage allows you to keep your car protected from harsh weather, adds extra storage space to the home, and adds serious resale value. If your garage is too packed full of stuff to get your car into it, it’s time to start cleaning. Use these tips to make your garage cleaning project a breeze!

Empty it Out

It’s easier to go through things if you’re not cramped in a small space. Pick one section of the garage and empty everything into your driveway or yard. Once everything is out, you can go through it and continue the cleaning process. Work in sections to avoid overwhelming yourself!

Sort the Junk

Next, you have to decide what to do with all the junk that was filling your garage. Sort through items and create a pile you want to keep, a pile you can donate or sell, and a pile of garbage. If you’re not sure about an item and get tempted to start a “maybe” pile – that’s a sign you don’t need the item! Things you keep should be items that have great sentimental value, serve a functional purpose, or add value to your life. Leave the items you’re holding out of the garage until you’ve sorted through everything. That way, you’ll only have to reorganize once!

Rent a Dumpster

Trash will add up quickly when you’re cleaning out a garage. Instead of taking trips to the dump or overwhelming your trash pickup person, rent a dumpster! Dumpsters come in various sizes, depending on how much you have to get rid of. The rental dumpster will be delivered to your home and placed conveniently outside the garage. As you sort, throw the trash in the dumpster! When you’re finished cleaning, the dumpster will be picked up, and the contents will be disposed of. Renting a dumpster is the easiest way to make the trash part of your garage clean out in a one-step process!

Organize

Once you’ve gotten rid of what you don’t need, start organizing the things that you’re keeping. Using storage bins, shelving units, and labels will make it easy to find what you need when you need it. Items stored in the garage should be protected against possible water and pests that could enter the garage. Use hanging hooks to keep tools, bicycles, and extension cords off the floor!
