Decluttering tips for the holiday season

While it may be a busy time of year, the holidays are a great time to declutter and organize your home. What may take a few hours upfront will save you much more time in the long run.

So why declutter around the holidays? It’s simple…you’re likely rotating things around in your home anyway, making room for seasonal decor and putting some of your year-round items away until the New Year.

This can be messy work and after a long day of decorating, it’s easy to get careless about how you organize things to be stored away. That makes it the perfect time to be more thoughtful about some of these items and take the time to consider whether you really want them taking up space in your home any longer.

If you have a tough time getting rid of things or have no clue where to start when it comes to organizing, you can use these tips to help make holiday decluttering a breeze.

One of these things is not like the other…

This is the low-hanging fruit of decluttering. If pumpkin decor has found its way in with snowmen, you’ll want to do some reorganizing. This will make holiday decorating way easier moving forward and offers you the opportunity to use the next step to declutter and determine what to keep, what to donate, and what to toss.

Ask yourself how each item makes you feel

It may seem silly, but being more mindful while going through your holiday items can help take your brain off autopilot and consider whether or not you actually need each item you go through. As you take things out of storage, hold onto each piece for just a few seconds and see how you feel. If you have warm, fuzzy feelings, you should keep it. If it doesn’t elicit any feeling in particular, you can likely live without it.

A place for everything and everything in its place

Clutter is the result of items not having a home when not in use. If you don’t have a good year-round storage solution for your holiday decorations, they will just end up cluttering your basement, attic, or storage unit.

There are plenty of storage solutions out there, so start by figuring out which one works best for your decor. If you have mostly knick-knacks, you won’t need a huge storage bin to keep them out of the way the rest of the year. When using a storage bin of any kind, be sure to label it properly, or better yet, use a clear storage bin that will show you exactly what’s inside.

Set small goals to get you to the finish line

Not everyone finds organizing and decluttering enjoyable, and that’s okay! You don’t have to completely reorganize your home in one day. Setting small goals, like working through your holiday items, can help ensure you don’t get overwhelmed and give up midway. With a little effort, you’ll have your holiday decor organized in no time.
